Henry Mercer was born in a rather well off family the year 1856 in Doylestown, Pa in Bucks County.
Mercer is very well known for his house, Fonthill, which he first began to build between the years of 1908 and 1910. His first inspirations for the house came when he stumbled across a bunch of objects while searching for tools for his fireplace. He liked the objects so much that he wish to put them on display calling them “The Tools of the Nation Maker”. The entire building is a result of Mercers active imagination. Fonthill consists of 44 rooms, 32 stairwells and 18 fireplaces. There are over 900 objects and prints from all over the world, including Mercers own prints and creations, on display throughout the entire house. Mercer is quoted as saying that Fonthill is a concrete castle for the New World”. It is part of our nations historic landmarks.
